Males might experience a certain set of negative effects of steroids. These include testicular atrophy, reduce sperm count or infertility, gynocomastia (the appearance of breast tissue) and increased risks of prostate cancer. Additionally, when males add steroids to their system, they experience the negative effects of steroids that have to do with their body shutting down the natural production of hormones. Generally this cessation of hormone production will likely return to normal as long as the steroid use hasn't been too long or too much.
Females experience certain negative effects of steroids as well. These negative effects of steroids, also called virilization, include increased facial hair, premature balding, decreased or ceased menstrual cycles and a deepening of the voice.
When adolescents take steroids, they experience negative effects of steroids as well. The elevated levels of testosterone signal to the body to stop growing. So, when adolescents use steroids their bodies will become locked into their current height. This is a permanent negative effect of steroids.
While not all of these negative effects of steroids are permanent or even life threatening, the ones that are can be particularly harmful, even fatal.
