Risks high and benefits insignificant with anti-aging hormonesA leading medical authority has criticized usage of anti-aging hormones in response to a recently released report “The use of hormones for “anti-aging”: a review of efficacy and safety,” by the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Council.

The example demonstrated by the AMA was applauded by Dr. Thomas T. Perls, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. AMA recently made an assessment of benefits and risks associated with growth hormone, testosterone, estrogen, and DHEA for anti-aging.

From Sciencedaily.com:

“The AMA’s review of the risks and benefits of these hormones in the setting of anti-aging and athletic enhancement is very important given its inclusion of the consensus and position statements of the key professional medical societies as well as the federal agencies that guard public health.” states Dr. Perls in the editorial.

The editorial summarizes the AMA’s assessment for each of the purported anti-aging hormones and essentially the bottom line of his argument is that in terms of anti-aging, the risks of these hormones out-weigh the little or no benefit. Dr. Perls denounces the marketing of these hormones, particularly growth hormone and anabolic steroids (anabolic steroids are variations of testosterone), for anti-aging. He also provides guidelines for spotting “red flags of quackery” and basic advice that physicians can lend to their patients in their pursuit of healthy aging.

The efforts of AMA were appreciated by Dr. Perls in an editorial appearing in the Future Medicine journal Aging Health.

Random drug testing for high school students beyond sanctions

Random drug testing for high school students beyond sanctionsAccording to a study led by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE), a high proportion of public school districts have instituted random drug testing beyond sanctions as set by the U.S. Supreme Court.

This study will play an important role in monitoring the occurrence of random drug testing to prevent the use of steroids in sports and schools in the coming times, as per Dr. Chris Ringwalt, Senior Research Scientist at PIRE.

From News-Medical.Net:

Nearly all school districts that implemented random drug testing procedures subjected their athletes to the possibility of being tested, and two-thirds randomly tested high school students who participated in other extracurricular activities. More than a quarter of the districts that implemented random drug testing subjected all their high school students to the possibility of being tested.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1995 that testing student athletes for drugs is constitutional, even in the absence of any suspicion of substance use. In a subsequent case, the Court extended its ruling to include students participating in extracurricular activities.

“Random student drug testing will likely continue to be controversial and the practice is likely to be contested, just as we saw with the recent ruling by the Washington State Supreme Court,” said Dr. Chris Ringwalt, Senior Research Scientist at PIRE. The Washington State Supreme Court ruled on March 13, 2008, based on a lawsuit that student athletes brought against a local school district, that random drug testing of student athletes is not allowed under the state’s constitution, despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1995 ruling (Supreme Court of the State of Washington. York v. Wahkiakum School District No. 200. Docket No: 99-2-00075-6, March 13, 2008).

It is important to note here that more and more young people have been reported using anabolic steroids for building solid muscles and improving the level of performance.

The World of Anabolic Steroids

Thursday 03, Jun 2010

The World of Anabolic SteroidsAnabolic steroids are used by sportsmen, especially bodybuilders and strength athletes, to build solid muscles in short time. They are synthetic hormones capable of promoting the processes of protein retention and tissue growth.

But use of steroids can result in side effects when they are abused or of a low quality and these side effects may vary from depression to psychological changes and from increased aggression to infertility.

From Topics.nytimes.com:

Steroids came to weight lifting in Russia during the 1950s, and to America by 1960. By the end of the decade, other elite athletes had discovered the drugs. For nearly two decades, starting in the late 1960s, East German women dominated the international sports stage, aided by an organized system of anabolic steroid use. Despite strong testing procedures, steroid-related scandal has continued to follow the Olympic Games, the Tour de France and major professional sports.

Not all revelations of steroid use are accompanied by outrage. An admitted former user of steroids, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is governor of California. Professional wrestling, where steroid use has been widely documented, has been a ratings leader on cable television for years.

Like every other thing in this world, steroids can have bad effects but only when abused and the best way out is using them under medical guidance and for legal purposes.

Anabolic steroids can help dialysis patients

Anabolic steroids can help dialysis patients The use of anabolic steroids by patients suffering kidney diseases may prove to be effective to increase lean muscle mass besides minimizing the fatigue level to a significant extent, as per a new study.

Kidney disease patients tend to experience malnutrition and an accompanying loss of muscle mass and these side effects have been associated in the past with an increased mortality.

From Bio-Medicine.Org:

A team of University of California San Francisco researchers, led by Kirsten L. Johansen, M.D., UCSF assistant professor of medicine, epidemiology & biostatistics, studied a group of patients who were receiving dialysis and were suffering from malnutrition.

In a randomized, double blind trial, 29 patients were given either the anabolic steroid nandrolone decanote or a placebo (dummy medication) for a six-month period. All of the patients were receiving dialysis treatments at San Francisco General Hospital. At the end of the trial, patients receiving the anabolic steroid gained an average of 5.7 pounds more lean body mass than the patients who got the placebo. Also, the patients who received the steroid reported less fatigue and scored better on physical performance tests. The researchers’ results are published in the April 14 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Hemodialysis, the most common form of dialysis in the United States, is a medical procedure employed when a patient’s kidneys cannot properly clean the blood of toxins and waste products. A patient’s blood is removed from the body via a tube inserted in a vein, filtered by a dialysis machine, and then replaced. Typically, this process must be repeated three times a week and takes three to four hours. In some cases, dialysis is considered a “bridge” while the patient is awaiting a kidney transplant - which can be up to a three year wait in the US.

This study was supported by grants from the National Center for Research Resources, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the Bay Area Nutrition Center.

Great risks due to dietary supplements enriched with steroids

Great risks due to dietary supplements enriched with steroidsDietary supplements that are enriched with steroids pose a great risk for severe health ailments, a fact that was reaffirmed by three recent cases reported to researchers at the Henry Ford Hospital.

These cases have been discussed in detail in the current issue of The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology and were related to patients with liver injury and renal failure.

From Medicalnewstoday.com:

The three cases outlined in the article now bring the total of cases reported in the last year to six.

Anabolic steroids have long been known to cause liver damage, but what is not widely known is that over-the-counter health food supplements may actually contain these compounds,” says Dr. Gordon. “The buyer of these compounds likely has no idea that he is ingesting these agents, even after reading the small print on the label.”

The U.S. F.D.A. had already issued a warning in relation to over-the-counter sale of bodybuilding supplements enriched with anabolic steroids.

It was remarked by lead author Stuart C. Gordon, M.D., Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Henry Ford Hospital that though the numbers of such cases may be low now but that does not mean that such kind of supplements can be allowed to pose health risks.

Kidney dysfunction possible with anabolic steroid use

Kidney dysfunction possible with anabolic steroid useBodybuilders and strength athletes making use of anabolic steroids for delivering dramatic on-field performances may end up destroying their kidney. This previously unrecognized finding was revealed by a paper presented at the American Society of Nephrology’s 42nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in San Diego, CA.

The paper indicated that habitual use of anabolic steroids can lead to severe health complications, including severe kidney dysfunction.

From News-Medical.Net:

Reports of professional athletes who abuse anabolic steroids are increasingly common. Most people know that using steroids is not good for your health, but until now, their effects on the kidneys have not been known. Leal Herlitz, MD (Columbia University Medical Center) and her colleagues recently conducted the first study describing injury to the kidneys following long-term abuse of anabolic steroids. The investigators studied a group of 10 bodybuilders who used steroids for many years and developed protein leakage into the urine and severe reductions in kidney function. Kidney tests revealed that nine of the ten bodybuilders developed a condition called focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a type of scarring within the kidneys. This disease typically occurs when the kidneys are overworked. The kidney damage in the bodybuilders has similarities to that seen in morbidly obese patients, but appears to be even more severe.

This study was conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Vivette D’Agati, MD at Columbia Univeristy Medical Center. The list of study co-authors included Glen Markowitz, MD, Joshua Schwimmer, MD, Michael Stokes, MD, Cheryl Kunis, MD, Vivette D’Agati, MD, (Columbia University Medical Center); Alton Farris, MD, and Robert Colvin, MD (Massachusetts General Hospital).

Anabolic steroids effective for improving surgical repair of shoulder tears

Thursday 07, Jan 2010

surgical-repairSurgical repair of massive or recurrent tears of the shoulder’s rotator cuff tendons can be improved with anabolic steroids, as per a research from the UNC’s School of Medicine.

The study was led by Dr. Spero Karas, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery in UNC’s School of Medicine and appeared in an issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

From News-Medical.Net:

Anabolic steroids benefit millions of people a year, said Karas, including those with deficiencies in sex hormones and burn victims who need to build up their metabolism to repair musculoskeletal tissue. They also are FDA-approved for treating anemia for their ability to help the body rebuild blood.

As it’s widely known that anabolic steroids can build muscle mass and strength, Karas said he thought these properties might apply to shoulder tissue and that Banes’ bioartificial tendon might provide the appropriate model for testing.

“In this new study, supraspinatus tendon cells were harvested from my patients during rotator cuff surgery, isolated and then sent to Albert’s lab,” Karas said. “The cells were then grown in his culture media to coalesce and form this experimental tendon model, the bioartificial tendon.”

It was further remarked by Karas that there were significant improvements in the biomechanical properties of the bioartificial tendon matrices when they were initially treated with anabolic steroid and then mechanical load or strain.

Steroids trigger long-lasting aggression in teenagers

Steroids trigger long-lasting aggression in teenagersAccording to a U.S. Study, steroids can cause long-lasting effect on teenagers’ brains apart from flipping the brain switch for aggression for almost two years.

It was also revealed during the study that anabolic steroids can result in permanent brain changes.

From News-Medical.Net:

Neuroscientists are deeply concerned about the rising adolescent abuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs), given the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s estimate that nearly half a million 8th to 10th-grade students abuse AASs each year.

Not only do steroids set kids up for heavier use of steroids and other drugs later in life, it is known that long-term steroid use can cause mood swings, hallucinations and paranoia, liver damage and high blood pressure, as well as increased risk of heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer.

Coming off steroids can also lead to depression.

The researchers at Northeastern University, Boston, examined the behaviour of adolescent hamsters when another hamster was put into their cage.

Dr Richard Melloni, who led the research, remarked that people using or considering to initiate the use of steroids must be highly cautious of health risks from steroids in the long-run and the serious potential for aggression and violence.

It was remarked by many other researchers that teenagers must stay away from steroids as their young bodies cannot handle the effects of steroids like mature bodies and illegal use of steroids is not recommended to any one.

Infantryman caught with steroidsJoshua Alexander Norman, 21, was caught hiding anabolic steroids in his room last August 2009.

A soldier from Darwin, Australia, he was caught possessing steroids in his room at Robertson Barracks during a hygiene inspection.

On November 15, he pleaded guilty to three drug charges before the Darwin Magistrates Court. He admitted to possession of two varieties of steroids and a few cannabis seeds.

According to his lawyer, Michael Burrows, Norman owned some steroids because he uses it for “aesthetic purposes”.

Attorney Burrows further added that what his client had were within the range of personal use. The two tablets were stacked together to achieved maximum results.

Aside from aesthetic purposes, the drug was also used to help him in his job as an infantryman. Norman regularly undergoes drug tests as an army officer. Of all his tests, he never tested positive.

Many steroids users do not only use the drugs for aesthetic purposes but to also to give them the advantage in their work.

Court reports showed that Norman allegedly held the cannabis seeds for a friend. However, he forgot about them.

Magistrate John Birch ordered the drugs to be confiscated and destroyed. He also sentenced Norman and fined him $1,200.
