Steroids do not prove efficacious for wheezing children

Steroids do not prove efficacious for wheezing childrenSteroid tablets do not reduce the symptoms of virus-induced wheezing in pre-school children, as per a new research involving medical experts at The University of Nottingham.

Researchers from The universities of Nottingham, Leicester and Bart’s in London have been at the centre of a leading study to evaluate whether or not steroid medications can provide relief from wheezing symptoms in children under the age of five years.

From News-Medical.Net:

There has been ongoing controversy in the medical community regarding how to best treat pre-school children who are admitted to hospital with severe wheezing. Steroids remain an important treatment for children with asthma but pre-school children with viral-induced wheeze, where symptoms are only associated with colds or flu and do not persist when the child is not infected with a virus, have also been treated with steroids in the past. This trial, funded by Asthma UK and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, definitively shows that steroid tablets do not help these children.

The research was carried out by Dr Alan Smyth, Associate Professor and Reader in Child Health, and Terence Stephenson, Professor of Child Health, at The University of Nottingham in collaboration with Dr Monica Lakhanpaul, Senior Lecturer from the University of Leicester and Consultant Paediatrician in Children’s Community Health Service for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and Professor Jonathan Grigg of Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr Mike Thomas, Chief Medical Advisor for Asthma UK, welcoming this study said that these results could have positive implications for the medical community.

Fitness champ’s death linked to malaria and steroids

admin

Fitness champ’s death linked to malaria and steroids Doctors concluded that Mahesh Khokarale’s death might be due to prolonged steroids use, which severely weakened his liver, so that when malaria struck him, his body was not able to fight back.

Mahesh worked as a gym instructor in the Worli branch of Gold’s Gym in Mumbai. According to Althea Shah, general manager, fitness and operations at Gold’s Gym, Mahesh had been with the company for five years. She does not think that he needed to use steroids as a fitness trainer. However, Mahesh could have taken steroids without their knowledge since he started training for the Mumbai Shree title last year. He was also training for the Bharat Shree competition for February 2010.

Upon examination of Mahesh’s blood test results, they found that his liver was badly damaged. Based on the nature of his work, they concluded that he might have taken steroids for a long time. Mild malaria rarely causes severe damage to the liver.

Mahesh suffered mild fever on October 31 and thought that it was just an ordinary fever. The next day, the fever persisted and he was forced to rest at home. On Monday, he went to KEM Hospital where he suddenly collapsed and went into a coma. His condition worsened and he was finally transferred to ICU.

From Ahmedabad Mirror:

Gym instructor unexpectedly dies of ‘mild malaria’ because, doctors suspect, his internal organs had been ravaged by use of steroids.

Recent study shows steroids effective for curing pneumonia patients

admin

Recent study shows steroids effective for curing pneumonia patientsAccording to a study by scientists from the UT Southwestern Medical Center, treating pneumonia patients with steroids and antibiotics is far better than treating them with antibiotics alone.

This study also suggested that the use of steroids is an effective option for treatment of inflammation in the lungs of a pneumonia patient. The study was headed by Dr. Robert Hardy, Study’s Senior Author & Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.

From News-medical.net:

Adding corticosteroids to traditional antimicrobial therapy might help people with pneumonia recover more quickly than with antibiotics alone, UT Southwestern Medical Center scientists have found.

Unlike the anabolic steroids used to bulk up muscle, corticosteroids are often used to treat inflammation related to infectious diseases, such as bacterial meningitis. Used against other infectious diseases, however, steroid therapy has been shown to be ineffective or even harmful.

In a study available online and in a future issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, researchers at UT Southwestern show that mice infected with a type of severe bacterial pneumonia and subsequently treated with steroids and antibiotics recovered faster and had far less inflammation in their lungs than mice treated with antibiotics alone.

The study also remarked that a combination of antibiotics and steroids can be considered as one of the best treatment options available in present day times for treating patients during asthma (M pneumoniae infection) attack. It was also said that while antibiotics are good for killing the bug, steroids play an important role by treating inflammation in the lungs.

The findings of this study were supported by the National Institutes of Health.
